Environmentalists rejoice! Just hours after she was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year, EA Sports announced that teen climate activist Greta Thunberg will be gracing the cover of Madden NFL 21.
“She earned it. When you want to save the environment, what you gotta do is get out there on the field and save the environment,” said the video game’s namesake, John Madden. “When she gets out there on third down and protests doing the protest thing, she reminds me of Walter Payton running the football when he has the football and he runs the football into the end zone and scores a touchdown. That’s the way you score points.”
Some have criticized the decision, saying the football video game cover should have gone to someone more qualified, like Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson or the Hong Kong protestors. But EA Sports is standing by Thunberg, saying she’s the future of the Madden franchise.
“Her coach told me she’s so good at saving the environment that she could have been a starter on either offense or defense,” said Madden. “When you got someone like that, who’s a leader in the locker room and then comes out on the field and sails across the Atlantic Ocean and Boom! That’s the kind of activist you want.”
Others have predicted that U.S. President Donald Trump would be upset upon hearing the news, as he was also in the running for the Madden cover.
“She doesn’t scare me,” said Trump. “Going into next season she’ll probably suffer from the Madden curse and tear her ACL anyway.”
