Hot on the heals of Taylor Swift‘s new video “You Need to Calm Down,” Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sir Elton John has released a new song that boldly supports Taylor Swift teen fangirl culture.
“I just think that everybody deserves to be treated equally, whether they are a fanatical young devotee of Taylor Swift or not,” said John. “I’ve been silent on this issue for a long time, but it’s time that I spoke up. Those 12 to 17-year-olds who are dedicated to a complete stranger to the point of insanity deserve our love and respect the same way normal people do.”
Swift has received a mixed response for her video, which overtly supports the LGBTQ community. Many say she is merely “hijacking” a narrative for her own profit. Even John has been criticized for appropriating teen fangirl culture with his new video, although Swift says she backs him one hundred percent.
“I’m so honored that Sir Elton John has recognized the years of sacrifice of my loyal droids I mean fans,” said Swift. “It is my hope that the overwhelming support I receive from the LGBTQ community finally will help me crush the anti-fangirl rebellion that has plagued this country for too long.”
