Protecting himself from a polar vortex which brought record low temperatures to the Midwestern United States on Wednesday, Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus grew an extra mustache to protect his regular mustache from the cold, sources say.
Butkus, a native Chicagoan and local legend, is remembered as one of the toughest and meanest players ever to take the field. But even with his fearsome reputation, he says he’s not taking any chances exposing his primary mustache to -20 degree temperatures.
“I’ve played through some of the chilliest games on record at Soldier Field without so much as a mustache warmer, but this weather is like nothing I’ve ever seen,” said Butkus. “I urge any Chicagoans who have to go outside: don’t do it without bringing an extra mustache to keep you warm.”
At press time, the Chicago Fire Department had requested emergency aid from Butkus’ extra mustache to help rescue a child from a frozen Lake Michigan.
