WASHINGTON — Continuing its $25 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial, the National Park Service announced earlier this month that it had hired HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines to install a chic tile backsplash on the iconic monument.
“We took a look at the original monument and it really lacked character and color. This tile backsplash blends a modern touch with classic styling that plays off the natural lighting of the space,” said Ms. Gaines. “We also added a versatile kitchen island that’s great for entertaining guests and some rustic mahogany cabinets that I think the Lincoln family is going to love.”
A National Park Service spokesman says they were looking to add some charm and a homey simplicity to the usually stern and commanding national monuments, and the stars of the home renovation series Fixer Upper were the perfect candidates for the job.
“I think the open shelving and stainless steel appliances are going to give the whole Lincoln Memorial a simple, clean look,” said spokesman Greg Landers. “And the backsplash is so subtle and textured that it really ties it all together.”
“Honest Abe would be proud,” he added.
